Patch Test Calibration Tool

The “Patch” test is a field calibration procedure designed to identify and correct for constant orientation and timing biases between the sonar system and the integrated motion sensor as installed on the survey vessel. The tool can be used to calibrate pitch, heading, roll, and time. See the CTI Patch Test User Guide stored in the Docs folder of every SonarWiz 7 installation for more information.

To open the CTI Patch Test Calibration tool:

1. Enable the bathymetry dataset you will use for the calibration
2. Choose the calibration value from the drop down menu.
3. Use the mouse to draw a profile over the bathymetry dataset you want to use for the patch test.

Calibration Items

1. Calibration Items
The Calibration Items section shows the current data type, vessel, system, and calibration value for the currently opened data set. Use the channel selection to swap between the port and starboard values of the profile.
2

Settings...

2. Settings...
The Patch Test Settings window contains settings to adjust the colors of the profiles and window, the style and size of the data in the cross section view, the viewer scaling, and the min/max pings and samples for processing.
3

Calibration Controls

3. Calibration Controls
The Calibration Settings panel controls how the values will change in the selected calibration procedure.

To perform a manual calibration:
1. Set the mini mum value to test
2. Set the maximum value to test.
3. Set the calibration step size.
4. Use the blue slider to test values between the minimum and maximum value.

During manual calibration, the New box will indicate the current value being tested, the cross-section view will update to show how the selected value changes the overlapping profiles.

To perform an automatic calibration:
1. Set the minimum value to test
2. Set the maximum value to test.
3. Set the calibration step size.
4. Click the Recalculate button in the toolbar. The best value among those tested is displayed in the New text box.
4

Test Results Graph

4. Test Results Graph
During automatic calibration, SonarWiz will test each value from the minimum to the maximum using the step size. When the calibration is finished, SonarWiz will display a V-graph in the Test and Results panel. The V-graph shows the difference beween overlapping profile lines resulting from test values. The best value is when the difference between the profiles is minimized, that is, the point of the V-graph. SonarWiz will automatically select this value and display it in the New value text box.
5

Calibration Values

5. Calibration Values
The Calibration Values table shows the current Roll, Pitch, Heading and Latency values stored in the vessel configuration file for each channel of the sensor being calibrated. The New column shows the results of the calibration tests you have performed. The Save toggle will include the selected value when updating the vessel.
6

Survey Lines Panel

6. Survey Lines Panel
The Select Survey Lines panel allows for toggling the display of data sets in the cross-section.
7

Cross Section View

7. Cross Section View
The Cross Section View displays the raw bathymetry and profile lines for each of the datasets in the profile. The profile colors correspond to the data set colors in the Settings menu. The profiles are linked to the calibration values shown in the calibration pane and are updated dynamically as the calibration values are changed.

Output Message Log

8. Output Message Log
The Output Message log displays status messages from the calibration actions in the Patch Test Calibration tool.
